    First Aid Response

     

     

    Course Description

     

    On completion of the First Aid Response (FAR) course, participants will be capable of responding effectively to medical emergencies in a pre-hospital setting until the arrival of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Participants will be trained to:

    Manage life-threatening or potentially life-threatening conditions in the pre-hospital environment
    Provide first aid care for non-life-threatening conditions to prevent further harm prior to EMS arrival
    Deliver first aid response across a range of environments, including domestic, recreational, and workplace settings

     

     

     

    Eligibility / Student Requirements

     

     

    All Civil Defence Volunteers who hold a current Cardiac First Response (CFR) qualification.

     

     

    Course Duration

     

    Modules

    The minimum course duration is 18 hours. Your Civil Defence Officer (CDO) or instructor will advise whether the course is delivered over evenings, weekends, or a combination of both.

    Please note that, within Civil Defence, the minimum duration may be exceeded to allow additional time for practical skills development and assessment.

     

     

     

    Class Size/ Instructor Ratio:

     

     

    The recommended instructor-to-student ratio is 1:6. In exceptional circumstances, this ratio may be extended to a maximum of 1:8.

     

     

     

    Certifying Agency:

     

    Successful candidates will be awarded a PHECC / Civil Defence First Aid Response certificate. Certification is issued digitally by PHECC.

     

     

     

    Certification period: 

     

     

    The certificate is valid for two years. Re-certification training will be offered prior to expiry.

     

     

     

    Assessment

     

    Assessment consists of both theoretical and practical components:
    • Five practical skills assessments
    • One written assessment (20 multiple-choice questions, 30-minute duration)

    Pass Mark 60%

    Gloves and hand sanitisers will be available during the course - no specific PPE is required

     

     

     

    Equipment

     

     

    Equipment will be available during the course
